"Aquatic and Terrestrial Animal Story Activity" at Sprout House Classroom

In the Sprout House classroom, there is an engaging activity called the "Aquatic and Terrestrial Animal Story Activity." This activity allows children to explore the differences between water and land environments while observing and interacting with animal models to understand the relationships in nature.
To make the activity more captivating, the teachers combine biological models with animated storytelling to enhance the language development of 2- to 3-year-old children. The story revolves around the adventures of a crocodile, a frog, and a turtle: the crocodile rests in the water, the frog hops onto a rock, and the turtle slowly crawls along the water’s edge. The three animals share playful and intriguing interactions. In one story, the crocodile gets hungry and tries to eat the frog. However, the frog quickly jumps onto the rock to escape, and the turtle rushes to join the frog, helping it evade the crocodile. In the end, the crocodile watches helplessly as they escape together.
Initially, the activity was designed to include a fish to further illustrate the connection between aquatic and terrestrial animals. However, during the selection of animal models, only a sailfish model was available, which didn’t align with the intended ecological concept. As a result, the fish element was temporarily omitted.
Despite the absence of the fish, the story remains fascinating, allowing children to understand the living environments of different animals through storytelling while sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for exploration.
Benefits of the Activity
This "Aquatic and Terrestrial Animal Story Activity" not only supports the language development of 2- to 3-year-old children but also helps them enhance their observation and communication skills by describing the animals' behaviors. During storytelling, children learn new vocabulary and improve their language expression by mimicking phrases from the story.
For example, children observe and describe the actions of the crocodile, frog, and turtle, such as “The frog jumps onto the rock” or “The turtle slowly crawls.” These exercises sharpen their observational skills and improve the clarity of their descriptions.
Additionally, the activity encourages logical thinking by helping children understand the cause-and-effect relationships between the animals’ actions—why the crocodile wants to eat the frog, and how the frog and turtle work together to escape.
Through the challenges and interactions in the story, children gradually grasp the concept of natural predatory behavior. Moreover, the interactions between the animals illustrate the importance of ecological cycles, such as predation and escape, helping children gain an early understanding of concepts like food chains and ecological balance.
